Have you just come across this term for the first time? You’re not alone—I was in the same situation just two months ago!
I came across this term in the book ‘Nudge’.
The concept is simple. You open a food delivery app to order dinner. The app shows a banner at the top: “Free Delivery on Orders Over INR 200!” Your usual meal costs INR 150, but to save on the delivery fee, you add a dessert and a drink to reach INR 200.
After checkout, you realize you spent more than you would have if you’d just paid the delivery fee.
The person who have crafted this experience is the choice architect. In our life, we are always presenting choices to people. Be it providing options to divert your kid from a junk food or taking you partner to a shopping or making a sale. There, you will always craft the choices considering various aspects like less harmful, more probability to buy, more beneficial to you, etc. That is what choice architecture is.
Choice architecture refers to the deliberate crafting of decision-making environments. By subtly shaping how options are presented, choice architecture influences individual decision-making, often without their explicit awareness.
